Happy New Year, y’all!
New Year’s is my favorite holiday. I’m a very type-A person by nature, so I love anything that has to do with goal setting. But there’s something special about the promise of a new year that has everyone seeming just a little happier and a little more hopeful.
I spend a lot of time drafting my goals and resolutions for the coming year–and for the most part, I tend to be pretty diligent about sticking to them, as well. This year feels a lot different, mostly because the goals are a lot bigger. I feel stretched to capacity in a way that I never have before. Since Osiris arrived, everything feels much more challenging. I find myself simultaneously pulled down by the day-to-day minutiae, and enlivened about starting this new decade. Having him made it clear to me that although I love being a mom, our little family is definitely complete. That means my focus has shifted away from growing my family and forward to “what do I do with the rest of my life?”
Last year brought me a lot–I launched my digital media brand, Alaya Media, celebrated a year of designing content and websites as a freelancer, completed the coursework for my TEFL certification, visited Montreal (twice), and welcomed a new baby into our family. My father finally got the health care that he needed, and my grandmother, a woman who has my whole heart, passed away. I struggled with postpartum depression, nearly failed my semester, and designed a research study in a psychology lab. It’s been one heck of a year.
Looking Forward
This year promises to be just as busy. I joined a mentoring program, took on a new client, and began working out again. Damany is flying back and forth to Los Angeles every month for photo shoots, we have a trip planned just about every other week, and we have THREE cruises to go on this year. I have so much lined up to share with you all this year, including a few major changes for myself, babydroppings, and our family.
This year didn’t exactly start off according to plan, which is kind of a good thing. I think that we all start the year off with high hopes, but quickly get discouraged when life gets in the way. This year, I decided that I wanted to take this first month and get things in order. Of course, like everyone else, I’ve made some January resolutions. I have a goal to declutter the house and to set up routines to make #momlife a little easier. I’m also putting more time into my health by working out three times a week and cutting back on dairy and sugar (ah, sweet, sweet sugar). I’m trying to be a little more money-conscious too, which is so hard when I’m trying to make investments in all the things we want to do this year! I’m hoping that by taking the time to bring integrity and structure to the various areas of my life, it will make it easier to hit the big goals I have lined up for 2020.
Oh, and Before I Forget…
